About Paul’s Books

The Atkins Family Low Country Trilogy

Paul giving a walking tourA series of interlocking stories surrounding the lives of two brothers, Eli and Walker Atkins, living in Charleston, South Carolina. In Blood in the Low Country, the first of the Atkins Family Low Country sagas, readers meet Monty and Rose Atkins and their two boys, Eli and Walker. Monty and Rose are living the American dream but lies kept buried for years surface and explode in such fashion as to forever change the trajectory of the lives of these two young men when a brutal murder turns their worlds upside down.

In Eli’s Redemption, the second book in the series, readers watch how Eli deals with the dramatic, life-upending events of Blood in the Low Country.  Forced to flee to the Bahamas, Eli assumes a false identity until he’s able to free himself from the clutches of a professional criminal and clear his name.

In Blood Rivalry, Eli and Walker are married with families and living in Charleston each with a successful career. The story of the murder in the first book in the series has grown into mythical proportions and the weight of the shadow it casts has driven a wedge between Eli and Walker. But when Walker’s representation of several clients unearths secrets about the Governor of South Carolina, one Johnny Dunsmore, Eli and Walker come together in a race that will end either their lives or the career of Johnny Dunsmore.

Throughout this series, readers will encounter a cast of fascinating characters, some taken from the pages of history and others from Attaway’s own memories and life experiences, characters you are sure you’ve met, characters who make life rich and wonderful and, at times, dangerous. But through it all, a common theme emerges – the challenges to and joys of living free.

Readers who enjoy books based in the American South, and Charleston, SC in particular, will be drawn to the rich Southern setting and Paul Attaway’s love for the local culture.

The Prairies Book Review

Attaway effortlessly blends anticipation of a fast-paced thriller and emotional quotient of a well-crafted story into a complex and engrossing plot. Attaway's imagery of the South brings it to life. Though Attaway delivers an emotional blitz in the Atkins family's story, the novel, with its relentless suspense and high tension remains a suspense thriller at heart. There's a nonstop supply of surprising twists and shocking revelations, plus tender moments of longing and love. The result is an expertly plotted, utterly engaging thriller that keeps the reader deeply invested all the way to its satisfying conclusion. With its atmospheric Southern setting, masterful execution of the plot, and nail-biting action, this well-polished, multifaceted novel shines.

Bookview Review

Attaway's tension-filled narrative is rife on unexpected turns, effortlessly drawing the reader into the story while the intelligent, crisp prose keeps the pages turning. Struggling to find answers to their deep-rooted questions about identity and liberation, the protagonists carry heavy emotional baggage, and Attaway is excellent when it comes to exploring their inner turmoil, fears, insecurities, grief, rage, and regrets. Along the way, he examines themes of faith, revenge, redemption, and freedom. With its expert plotting, atmospheric setting, and relentless suspense, the novel makes for a page-turner. Both lovers of fast-paced thrillers and Christian mystery fans will be delighted.

The Book Commentary

A spellbinding thriller with characters that readers will adore. For a debut novelist, Attaway establishes himself as a great storyteller.

What Readers Are Saying

Being from Charleston, I was initially interested in reading Blood in the Low Country due to the location of the story. I am an avid reader but seldom write a review. However this book was so good, my conscience would bother me were I not to try to encourage others to get as much pleasure as I did. I could not put it down. I became a member of the Atkins family. Please, Mr. Attaway, write something this good again and soon. I'll be waiting.
This book is the best southern gothic read I've had in such a long time. The storyline and style of writing invites you into the beautiful southern lifestyle and ambiance — you'll almost think you are there. But the STORY itself will pull you in and have you on the edge of your seat. I felt compassion and rage and inspiration and nostalgia and so much more — but the emotional roller coaster is SO WORTH IT because of the redemption in the end. BUY THIS BOOK.
I couldn't put the book down. Lots of excitement! Very well written, and the flow was great. I don't want to give anything away so I'll leave it right there.

Kirkus Reviews

In this ambitious text, Attaway expertly evokes both the Lowcountry's "moss covered trees rising up from the swamps and grass islands" and the white beaches of the Bahamas. …for Pat Conroy fans who love golf, Attaway's absorbing novel will be a hole in one.

Publishers Weekly BookLife Review

A superior, character-rich thriller about a wrongfully accused teen fleeing '70s Charleston for the Bahamas. The follow-up to Blood in the Low Country does not disappoint — a fast-paced, intricately plotted shocker. A treat for mystery fans and thrill lovers, Eli's story exemplifies its genre, with Attaway's precisely detailed approach bringing life to each situation and character. A page-turner that offers an experience more rich in character than that term usually suggests. Even though it's a sequel, readers can enjoy Eli's story as a standalone, and even though Attaway's love for golf shines through the text, non-golfers should not be wary.

Chanticleer Book Reviews

5 Stars! Highly Recommended. Artistically, the author paints the picture of this young man's emotional journey. Along with Eli, the reader cringes with fears, thrills at joys, grieves at loss, and is surprised by new trouble and danger. Tension builds, keeping our interest and concern as Eli, and those around him, are tested by trials and tribulations.

Midwest Book Review

The unexpected twists and moments of realization in Eli's Redemption are exquisite. Readers receive a story that operates on different levels. Christian readers will appreciate its many spiritual reflections on rage, redemption, and revenge. Thriller readers will find the tension perfectly honed as the mystery plays out. Those who look for emotion-driven encounters and reflections will be especially pleased at the psychological depths Attaway probes as Eli reconsiders his life and feelings. Readers who enjoy stories that reach from and reflect the American South as they survey redemption and rejuvenation will find Eli's Redemption joins a powerful series.

What Readers Are Saying

"Eli's Redemption" definitely does not disappoint! After reading "Blood in the Lowcountry," I was excited to see what happened next with the Atkins family. I loved how the author weaved in plot from Book 1 into Book 2 to bring additional color to the overall storyline, including even more character development. Mrs. Babcock is now a favorite of mine!
Paul's sequel is suspenseful, nail biting, and full of both touching family moments and shocking family drama. Plenty of unforeseen twists and turns thrown at the reader will keep you intrigued until the very last page. I'm ready for more from the Atkins family!
What a page turner! Eli's Redemption keeps you guessing with its unpredictable plot and colorful cast of characters. The book is totally engaging as it takes you from Charleston, to the Bahamas, Scotland and back. You won't want to put it down until you reach its satisfying conclusion.
If you like reading about complex characters ranging from the hardened criminal to the acclaimed athlete to the exotic islander then this book is for you. If you like dynamic plots including international crime, extortion, betrayal, professional sports, brokenness and redemption then buy this book!

The Prairies Review

Charleston functions as an active force within the story rather than a simple setting. Its preserved charm, insulated elites, and quiet networks of loyalty underscore the divide between polished appearances and ethical compromise. Legal offices, private clubs, backcountry paths, and neglected stretches of water form a layered landscape where privilege and power quietly intersect. …a tightly coiled narrative where reputations harden into myth, power is exercised quietly, and old violence continues to dictate present-day lives. Attaway's writing is clear and confident. He trusts readers to follow implication instead of being guided by explanation. …a grounded thriller that values credibility and psychological weight over simple resolution.

Reader Views — 5 Stars

Fans of legal thrillers with as much bite as Blood Rivalry will not want to put this book down. Attaway has delivered one of the best installments in this genre…. emotionally satisfying, yet morally unsettling, and that's what makes it so intriguing. Perfect for fans of Greg Iles' Natchez Burning trilogy and James Lee Burke's A Private Cathedral.

BookLife Review

Attaway's command of character and finely evoked milieu over eras…fascinates and convinces, keeping the pages turning as this character-driven political thriller builds toward an urgent and satisfying confrontation. Smart, character-driven political thriller of family, loyalty, and corruption. Perfect for fans of Robert Bailey's Legacy of Lies and John Grisham's The Boys from Biloxi.

Seattle Book Review

…a compelling Southern saga that masterfully weaves together themes of power, family legacy, and the pursuit of redemption…. a must-read for fans of Southern Gothic and intricate legal dramas. …a sophisticated blend of legal thriller and historical drama…. a must-read for fans of Southern Gothic and intricate legal dramas.

What Readers Are Saying

Bloody Rivalry — a non-stop page turner. Loved this saga! Bloody Rivalry pulls you in fast and doesn't let go. From the first pages, the tension is palpable — this isn't just competition, it's obsession, power, and the kind of rivalry that blurs every moral line.
A gripping novel brimming with drama and tension, power and intrigue, centered on an American family whose future will be shaped by difficult decisions, rivalries, and secrets. Readers will be on the edge of their seats as they follow the betrayals and power struggles that will have far-reaching consequences for the characters' present and future lives. Ambition and loyalty are themes explored here — how far is a person willing to go to satisfy their ambitions? This is a novel that draws you into its plot and keeps you on the edge of your seat, wondering what will happen next.
This book is the perfect blend of suspense and family drama. Walker and Eli are so well-developed that I felt every emotion with them. The Dunsmore family's ruthless manipulation kept me on edge. I was impressed by how Attaway intertwined personal history with political scheming. Each chapter left me eager for the next. The ending was satisfying without being predictable.
Paul Attaway weaves a dense, atmospheric tale where the humid air of the South feels heavy with old secrets and new grudges. This third installment of the Atkins family saga pulls no punches, diving straight into the messy intersection of power and personal rebirth. Characters struggle to define themselves against the weight of their heritage, making every choice feel like a high-stakes gamble for their future. The writing captures that specific Southern grit perfectly, balancing the slow burn of a family drama with the sharp edges of a thriller. Readers who love stories about complex loyalties and the fight to start over will find plenty to sink their teeth into here.
