About Paul

Paul's Charleston

Homecoming

Meet Paul Attaway

I’m blessed. I have spent the last 35+ years with Lyn, my wife and best friend, over thirty of those years married. We met in college and have been together ever since. We raised three children in Phoenix, Arizona but now call Charleston, South Carolina our home.

Living in Phoenix, I had a short career as a lawyer and a longer career as a small business entrepreneur. Upon moving to Charleston, I picked up a pen and began life as a writer. My novels are family drama/murder mystery/suspense thrillers set in Charleston.

When I’m not spending time with Lyn enjoying all that Charleston has to offer, I enjoys studying history, giving tours, or working on my next book.

What It Means To Be A Southern Storyteller

On the simplest level, I define myself as a “Southern Storyteller” because my stories are either set in the South and/or involve characters that are born in the South. But there’s more to it than that. Every part of this country possesses its’ own unique charm and beauty as well as its’ own sordidness and ugliness, the South maybe more so. I hope to write stories that depict what Southerners are like and what life is like in the South and do so with compelling characters that may at times embody the good, the bad, the beautiful and the ugly. But I have hope and so it is my goal that readers, after finishing one of my stories, will put the book down filled with hope as well.

Why Charleston?

Charleston is the city that never ceases to be beautiful. Lyn and I discovered the Holy City in 2010 when one of our children decided to attend The College of Charleston. It didn’t take us long to fall in love with the lifestyle. Yes, the City is one you can enjoy on foot and it’s famous for its food, architecture, and history. But there’s so much more. For instance, if you enjoy life on the water, it’s all right here – boating, crabbing, fishing, sailing. Finally, people are moving here. People drive everything and this City is thriving.

But I feel a bit like the Prodigal Son. I moved away from the South after law school. While we returned occasionally to visit my family, we have spent the last 30+ years in Phoenix and exploring the American West. We loved it. The physical beauty is extraordinary, and we found it was a welcoming place to raise a family. We made lifetime friends. There’s also a prevailing attitude out West that holds that just because something hasn’t been tried doesn’t mean it shouldn’t. I appreciated that.

So, for ten years, we said that we lived in Phoenix and commuted to Charleston. Well, in 2020, that changed – we now live in Charleston and commute to Phoenix. Which is why I feel like a Prodigal Son. Quite simply, I have fallen back in love with the South. The people, the pace, the food, music, culture and college football!
