A great book for a book club is one that gets everyone talking about the characters, the plot twists, and what happens in the book. I believe Blood in the Low Country meets the criteria. Here are a few reasons why and a few discussion topics

• The story appeals to men and women.
• The story has compelling characters – some you will root for, some you will root against, and some you can relate to.
• The plot takes a few turns along the way.
• The characters experience life changing events in the book. What are those events? Do the characters change as a result? If so, how? How would you have reacted had you been in that character’s shoes? Have any of us been in similar shoes?
• The book takes place in the South in the 1970s. How does the author portray growing up in the South in the 1970s? Does the portrayal seem realistic?
• Discuss how the author uses descriptions of the weather and landscape to set the mood from time to time in the book.
• Discuss how the role of forensic crime solving technology in the 1970s comes into play.
• Describe the subplot involving the shady business transactions and how it played out. What do we learn about a few of the characters from how they responded?
• Discuss the various portrayals of religion and God in the book? How do the various characters view God’s involvement in our lives? Do they all believe in God? What do you believe the author’s views are?
• Certain scenes in the book may make you feel uncomfortable.
• An ending that will get you talking.
